Powerful, concentrated, dense ruby-colored wines characterize the 1996 vintage. Full bodied and muscular are also words that you see used to describe the product of this vintage.

Many of the cabernets and blends in this collection could be drunk now, as the once hard tannins have subsided leaving amazing fruit surrounded by structure. This prized collection is also built to age, as when first released, many thought the top releases of this vintage would not mature for 25 years, or more.

Standouts in this collection include micro quantity Dalla Valle (RP 93), situated 400 feet above the Napa floor in Oakville, Naoko Dalla Valle has maintained sole responsibility for the vineyards since her husband’s death in 1995; the La Jota Estate whose voice is characterized by cool winds, diurnal temperature swings and high altitudes; and, of course, Shafer (RP 98), the benchmark wine of the Stags Leap District.
